Cuisine and Restaurants:
In 2005, there were over 2,400 restaurants on the island of Majorca according to the Majorcan Tourist Board. They ranged from small bars to full scale restaurants. Despite Majorca's location in the Mediterranean, seafood is often imported.
Olives and almonds are typical of the Majorcan diet. The island now has over 4 million almond and olive trees. Among the food items that can be truly stated as being Majorcan are sobrassada, arros brut (saffron rice cooked with chicken, pork and vegetables), and the sweet pastry ensaïmada.
It goes without saying that in most areas, there will also be the dedicated Chinese, Italian, and English restaurants.
In any of these restaurants, it is worth remembering that the Spanish and Europeans eat very late into the evenings when compared to the English, so finding or booking a table after 8pm may well prove to be very difficult.
Majorcan cuisine naturally uses to the full, all of the islands home grown produce of pork and fish, and of course vegetables, with the usual and inevitable garlic, tomato and/or herbs to add to their already rich flavours.
All of the resorts have their own string of supermarkets, who clearly have to provide all nationalities with their own particular tastes in food, with of course, imported many UK brands, however, be prepared to pay more than in the UK.
They know you have to buy from them, so a little 'shopping around' the nearest shops/supermarkets on the first day of your holiday may well you money over your holiday period!
To go that one step further, where special needs or convenience takes your priority, there is a service provider on the island, who delivers your food and provisions to your doorstep.
