Medical Advice and Travel Insurance

If you are a disabled adult, or you are travelling with disabled children, we strongly advise that you do your research before your holiday to Majorca, on what kind of assistance and insurance and help is available to you, and what your disability rights are abroad.

The basic guidelines issued by DPTAC state that you can travel alone if you are not reliant on supplementary oxygen, and that you can feed yourself; that you can transfer to an on-board wheelchair (where available) on your own, and you can use an on-board toilet without assistance, that you can administer your medication without help and that you can understand instructions and make yourself understood.

A 24 hour emergency medical assistance is on hand through English speaking doctors throughout the island, giving a most comprehensive and reassuring coverage.

The European Health Insurance Card. (EHIC)

The European health Insurance Card, (EHIC), replaced the original E111 Form on the 31st December 2005, and entitles British citizens to reduced medical costs, or even free sometimes, the essential medical treatment whilst you are in an EEC, (European Economic Area country) or Switzerland.

The EHIC is normally valid for 3 to 5 years and covers your treatment for a chronic disease or pr-existing illness, but not if medical treatment is the main purpose for your trip.

If prior to 31st December 2005 you have ticked the relevant box on the E111 application form, then an EHIC would have been sent to you automatically during January 2006.

For new applicants the EHIC is available from the Department of Health web site, or by calling their help line on 0845 606 2030, or by picking up an EHIC pack from any local Post Office branch.
